Case Study: What's the Connecting Thread between Barack Obamah, Joe the Plumber and Site Promotion?

5/10/2010
Background:
My name is Elad and I belong to the team working on marketing, distribution and optimization on aplumbers.com. In this site, that was constructed, planned and developed throughout a period of six months, was invested many market studies, and it constitutes a broad information center about plumbing issues in the USA.

In the period that preceded the site's launching Barack Obamah and John McCain competed for US Presidency. During a campaign stop in the State of Ohio on October 12th, 2008, Barak Obamah was asked by a plumber called Joe Wurzelbacher, that until then was anonymous, about his small business tax policies. The conversation that developed between the candidate for presidency and Joe, that in time was famously dubbed "Joe the Plumber", took 05:37 minutes, and resulted in Joe achieving publicity not only in the United States, but also internationally.

Those 05:37 minutes turned our publicity efforts required to promote our internet site immeasurably bigger from those that we took into account in the preliminary planning of the site's development. Why so?

As for now there are 829,000 references of Joe Wurzelbacher in Google. These references appear in several of the leading online news sites including, www.foxnews.com cnn, New York Times, www.huffingtonpost.com, abcnews, and many more important newspapers, not only from America, but from the whole world.

In fact, nearly every city Wurzelbacher visits and wins press coverage, his name jumps to the top of the search results according to the word "Plumber" and the name of the city he has visited. This is due to the references in important sources (mainly newspapers, as already mentioned) that refer to his visit in that city. The quoting sources are regarded as credible according to different measures specified by leading search engines, and therefore a combination of the words "plumber" (reminding you that Joe was famously dubbed "Joe the Plumber") with the name of any city, almost automatically jumps to the top of search results in different sites.

How can we compete with this kind of "threat"?
To overcome the damage in ranking following Wurzelbacher top ranking in different cities (and sometimes in nationwide searches) we use plenty of articles discussing different aspects of plumbing. We distribute these articles throughout the site, and by that increase not only the scope of the search words through which people arrive to our sites, but also achieve referrals from outside sources that quote us. This entails hard research, nonstop maintenance of high quality content, and of course, allocation of financial resources that enable us to preserve an interesting, informative and an updated site. We believe that by means of an updated content, the vast scope of information in the site and the interesting material discussed, we will succeed in the long run to overcome the difficulty posed (not intentionally, of course) by President Obamah and Joe the Plumber.

The worst nightmare for home buyers is shelling out their life savings on their dream home and then having to spend a considerable sum of money on damaged plumbing. The older the structure the greater chance for waterproofing failures, poor insulation, burst pipelines, internal and external wall leaks.

A comprehensive thermographic image of the building or a through home inspection will ensure the detection of all the plumbing problems and risks before purchase, eliminating the need to break down walls.

Common Structure Failures that Thermographic Pictures or Home Inspections Detect

Rotten Water Pipe
In many cases certain parts of the plumbing will rot or rust over time. Water flowing through sections of pipe corrosion will become contaminated and unfit for human use. Rotten or rusty water pipes also lead to damage in walls, ceilings and floors in the home.

Burst Pipe
An undetected burst pipe leaks gallons of water and floods the home. Thousands of dollars are then needed to fix if not renovate the damage done to walls, floors and ceilings, not to mention the loss of your belongings. A thermo graphic picture has the ability to detect and alert against burst pipes with an accuracy of almost 100%.

Water Penetration
Water penetration is a common problem in old buildings lacking adequate waterproofing. Wet soil bordering basement walls can cause water to seep into the building and flood underground rooms in extreme cases. Excess water and moisture causes hazardous mold and fungi growth in the home that in some cases requires complete renovation of the wall cavity to rid the problem.

Electrical Defects
A thermo graphic picture of an active electrical panelboard gives a clear indication of warm parts that are too dangerous to use. Electrical parts, when hot, may explode in a long-term use.

Detecting those problems can save you thousands of dollars on top of great hardship should you encounter any of the above after buying your home.

Big and small water leaks are the most common causes for unusually high water bills. But before shaking your head in despair and checking for leaks under the foundation of your home - head for the toilet. Eight out of ten cases of excessive water usage originate from leaking toilets, and they are an easy fix.

The problem with a leaky toilet is that you cannot hear the sound of running water. That is why toilets are also termed the "silent leakers" - they can run constantly without being detected. A running toilet can multiple your water bill in no time. Before assuming the worst when receiving an inflated water bill, perform a simple dye test to determine if your toilet is the leaking source.

Add about 20 drops of food dye into the tank of your toilet. Wait half an hour without flushing the toilet. If color appears in the bowl, you have a leaking toilet that is most probably the culprit of the excessive water usage. Call your local plumber to fix the malfunctioning toilet.

If the dye test rules out the toilet as the leaking source, then you must go to your water meter and record the black and white digits on display. Read you water meter again after a trial period of a couple of hours without using water in the home. If you record different digits and notice the star or triangle shaped device spinning fast – that may indicate a leaking source not associated to your toilet. Have your plumber perform leak-detection and stop the water leak fast.

The Bowl Siphon

The bowl siphon is molded into the toilet bowl. Once a 2 gallon water surge fills the siphon tube, this mechanism will automatically be activated and suck waste out of the bowl and into the sewer pipe. As the bowl empties, air enters the siphon tube, stopping the siphoning process.

The Flush Mechanism

The flush valve is connected to a chain attached to the flush handle. Pushing the flush handle will cause the attached chain to lift the flush valve and reveal a 2-3inch diameter drain hole through which water enters the bowl. Most of the water will flow directly through a hole at the bottom of the bowl known as the siphon jet, and into the siphon tube to activate the siphoning process.

The Refill Mechanism

Once the tank is empty, the flush valve drops to the bottom of the tank to cover the drain hole and allow the refilling of the tank. The job of the refill mechanism is to fill the tank with enough water to activate the next siphoning process.

How a Toilet Works: Putting it all Together

1. Pressing the flush handle pulls the chain which lifts the flush valve.

2. About 2 gallons of water empty from the tank into the bowl in about 3 seconds.

3. The quick surge of water activates the siphoning process in the bowl. The siphon sucks waste out of the bowl down the sewer pipe.

4. As water is rushed out of the tank, the flush valve falls to cover the drain hole. This activates the refilling process of the tank and bowl.

5. As water levels rise in the tank so does the flush valve up to a certain level at which point the refill valve shuts off.

6. If the refill valve keeps running, the overflow tube will be activated to stop overfilling of the tank.

Americans flush about 4.8 gallons of water down toilets every day. Reducing the amount of water your toilet uses to flush away waste material will definitely help lower your water bills and save on scarce water in general.

Any toilet can be converted to low flush by following the simple steps below.

1. Fill half a gallon plastic container with water and sand, pebbles, gravel – whatever material handy to weigh it down the toilet tank. Remove any labels that might be stuck on the outside of the container. Seal the container.

2. Open the lid of the toilet tank and carefully insert the sealed container into the water. Readjust the lid back on the tank.

3. Done! Simply flush away using less water.

The New York Times reported that this method can save as much as half a gallon on each flush. The average American family of 5 people, where each person flushes the toilet about 5 times each day, can save up to 350 gallons every month. These water savings will show up in a much lower water bill.

Sediment tends to clog pipes over the years. When that happens, a good plumber will recognize the situation and perform a procedure which is also preventive. Pipe cleaning is actually a kind of "catheterization" - a strong flow of water is injected into the pipeline to break and push the sediment out. In difficult cases, special equipment is employed to create great pressure that forces out the obstruction.

To Clean a Pipe Without a Plumber:

1. Connect a rubber pipe to one of the faucets in your house and feed the other side directly into the drainage pipe.

2. Turn on the faucet.

3. To make it work, you should override the endpoints of the system - instead of draining water through the plumbing underneath the sink, reduce water pressure, disconnect the drainage pipe and connect the rubber pipe directly to it.

In simple cases you can do all that without a plumber. You can buy a rubber pipe at any hardware store and wrap a good coil around the tap and a plastic bag or sheet of rubber around the pipe and tubing connection at home – all this is needed to create an "open blockage pressure system". A bit primitive, but it will work - if you have good hands there is a chance that you won't destroy the house.

Always be careful with flushing clean plumbing pipes. If you don't have the right knowledge or enough D.I.Y experience you can do more damage than good. Without the necessary tools, knowledge or experience it is highly recommended to invite a certified plumber on the scene.

Different factors are taken into consideration to ensure that the most unique plumbing demands of the public are accommodated, utilizing a very large construction cost database. This is undoubtedly a quick, easy and very useful method of getting a plumbing estimate.

A plumbing estimates calculator is actually a form of software, programmed to compute the estimated cost of a plumbing job. You should be aware that this tool is for informational purposes only. The estimates it generates are based on pricing information and regional cost. Actual project costs may vary due to local cost difference and site specific project matters.

So who supplies the labor and material costs utilized in creating an estimate? An estimates calculator has a wide compilation of construction data resources which will be utilized in generating an estimate. Factors such as exact dimensions, consumer price index, contractor markup, specific materials, and regional pricing are all considered to end up with a close-to-actual estimate.

Costs used in computing estimates are gathered from hundreds of lumberyards across the nation. Labor trends and pricing service data from remodeling contractors are also compiled. These data are updated every 90 days and they are gathered in over 200 different regions. This enables the tool to use price specific to your location for a more accurate estimate.

The amount that the calculator will generate is derived from the basic data you inputted regarding your planned plumbing project, though your actual cost may vary. As you meet with your local plumbing contractor, further assessment of your property will be performed. Accurate measurements and further details will be taken. Aside from them, unusual terrain, access to work area, and weather conditions are also taken into consideration.

Now that you know what a plumbing estimates calculator is, acquaint yourself with the data needed so you can start gathering them. As you take necessary measurements, make sure to be accurate. When entering every piece of data make certain to provide precisely what is required in the specific field. Start using a plumbing estimates calculator now!

It's easy to forget that plumbers were not always around and that sewers, or rather the plastic pipes that make up domestic plumbing systems, are relatively new inventions.

Lack of plumbing systems was the number one cause of diseases in the ancient world. In the ancient kingdom of Indus River, North West India, was discovered archaeological evidence of a technological solution for wastewater treatment and water supply lines.

At the same time, plumbing systems were also developed in the Assyrian kingdom and Pharaonic Egypt. These two cultures were the first to use running water, pumping facilities, and sewer systems that resemble modern plumbing.

The great plumbers of the ancient world were the Romans. Their plumbing systems, just like their cobblestone paths, still remain intact in many places to this very day.

In the sixteen century Sir Harington devised Britain's first flushing toilet. Over the course of the British Empire a new profession developed, that of the plumber – and for the first time laws were enacted requiring, for reasons of public health, the construction of plumbing systems as well as toilet units in every new home.

The next step, which brings us to present day, occurred in the American colonies. In the early eighteenth century the first ten plumbing systems appeared in New York and Boston and transported running water to many homes. From the nineteenth century America become the successor of ancient Rome, as the continent with the biggest and most complicated plumbing systems in history. From then on this plumbing technology immigrated from the U.S. to the rest of the world.

This simply implies that emergency plumbing services are more expensive compared with non-urgent plumbing jobs not only due to urgency factors, but also the level of difficulty involved. Whether the problem is urgent or not, it is best to let professional plumbers assess your home or office for free plumbing quotes. These quotes will give you insight as to which type of plumber can provide you with the most reasonable repair costs and services.

But how do plumbers calculate repair costs in plumbing quotes? The answer is fairly simple. Each contractor has his own hourly rate, based on years of experience and the field of expertise. The time of the day which you prefer to have your plumbing problems fixed are also taken into consideration. If it is an emergency or urgent plumbing job, then you should expect for a higher repair cost. Plumbing services performed during weekends cost more than when they are done during weekdays. These factors are put together in addition with some other considerations in calculating repair costs.

To save on repair costs, make sure to ask about available plumbing discounts as you dial different companies or individual contractors for cost estimates. Make sure to gather several estimates as they will assist you to better approximate the cost of different plumbing repair jobs. Doing apples-to-apples comparisons of the estimates will allow you to end up with the most sensible deal.

Plumbing repair quotes are not difficult to find. In fact, such quotes are even available on the internet. By entering the necessary information, an estimated plumbing cost derived from the specifications you entered will be created. However, your actual cost may vary. It is best to ask the company that provides the estimates calculator for a follow-up onsite inspection for a more accurate cost.

As you analyze plumbing repair costs provided by different plumbing companies or contractors, ensure taking your time in inspecting every detail. Look for loopholes which might only lead to unforeseen fees later on. Also, try to avoid plumbing repair costs that are too low as you might only end up paying high hidden fees. Consider the marginal costs as they are more reliable. Start finding the most reasonable plumbing repair cost in town now!

Repair rates vary depending on the specific type of plumbing job required and the region in which your home or office is situated. If you are from a big city, then expect to pay higher than those in small cities as the difference in the cost of living affects plumbing repair rates. The time of the day also influences these rates as plumbing jobs performed during odd hours like late nights or weekends can considerably increase the prices. Nonetheless, there are basically two methods that plumbers use to calculate plumbing quotes.

One of the methods is the Time and Material Pricing basis. The estimated number of hours is multiplied by the per hour rate then the total amount is added to the cost of materials to be used. Majority of repairmen and mechanics utilizes this method of charging. Plumber rate per hour vary from one plumber to another. Experienced plumbers usually charge higher rates than those with minimal years of experience. Handymen and plumber’s assistants who are employed in plumbing companies are paid with lower rates compared with master plumbers who get the highest hourly rate in this industry.

The other method of quote calculation is the Flat Rate Pricing. In this method, rates are determined by the plumbing job involved. Considering that the time to be consumed in completing the job is not taken into consideration in determining the quote, some plumbers charge additional fees in case the job is finished beyond the expected timeframe. This can be very annoying on the part of the homeowners as the extra charge is normally unanticipated. If the plumber you are hiring calculates your quote using this method, make sure to prepare an extra amount just in case an additional fee is charged on you.

Aside from the quote calculation methods mentioned above, some plumbers include a set rate for them to show up for a job. Whether your plumber uses Time and Material Pricing basis or Flat Rate Pricing, you should expect for additional cost for extra materials or working time especially for complicated plumbing tasks.

From its beginnings in 1906 to the present day, the ASSE is dedicated to protecting public health. ASSE's product performance standards, professional certifications and product listing programs have been developed in the interest of their motto, "Prevention Rather Than Cure."

The American Society of Sanitary Engineering owes its beginning to Mr. Henry B. Davis, Chief Plumbing Inspector for the District of Columbia. In 1906, Mr. Davis believed it was vital that plumbing practices in the United States be standardized to protect the nation’s health and welfare. One of the first goals of the Society was to “formulate regulations for a consistent and uniform modern sanitary advancement of plumbing.” This led to the development of “The National Plumbing Code.”

Today, ASSE has over fifty published product standards with many more standards in the development stages. ASSE also has three professional qualifications standards for the plumbing and pipefitting industries - the ASSE/ANSI Series 5000, Cross-Connection Control Professional Qualifications Standard, the ASSE/ANSI Series 6000, Professional Qualifications Standards for Medical Gas Systems Personnel and the ASSE/ANSI Series 7000, Professional Qualifications Standards for Plumbing-Based Residential Fire Protection Systems Installers and Inspectors. The ASSE/ANSI Series 5000 is the only voluntary consensus standard for backflow prevention professionals in the United States.

ASSE’s product standards are minimum performance requirements for component parts of the plumbing system. These standards detail how a product is intended to function under normal operating conditions, not how it is designed or manufactured. This led to the development of the Product Listing (Seal) Program in 1964, with the first listing granted in 1965. This program has proved to be a help to both manufacturers and local plumbing officials. Today, the Product Listing Program has continued to grow internationally and continues to promote ASSE’s motto “Prevention Rather Than Cure”.

The next program that ASSE established was the Professional Certification program. ASSE is a third party certifier, certifying individuals to the professional qualifications standards. Cross connection control professionals may be certified to one or more of the standards within the Series 5000 Standard. Individuals may also be certified as an Installer and/or Inspector within the Series 7000 Standard for Plumbing-Based Residential Fire Protection Systems. Each individual must pass both a written and a practical examination on the criteria established in the course outline.

Throughout its history, ASSE’s motto, “Prevention Rather Than Cure” has guided the Society’s activities in a wide range of programs designed to educate the industry and the public on the necessity of correct plumbing installations.

Yet there are cases when there is no choice but to call a certified plumber to the rescue – the case of a burst pipe is a good example.

Burst pipes are no picnic. In most cases it requires opening the wall, replacing the damaged section of the pipe and then closing and re-plastering the wall. If tiles are present, they will also require fixing – a common procedure as most split pipelines occur in areas where hot water flows through and there is moisture from the outside - in "wet rooms" such as bathrooms, showers, kitchens, etc.

Burst Pipeline: Early Detection

Early detection has the ability to significantly reduce damage in all respects.
Contrary to popular belief, pipes do not burst suddenly but often deteriorate over a long period of time. The sound of running water can be heard for days or even weeks before you will actually begin to notice dampness, swelling of the plaster and paint, mold and the like.

In most cases professional plumbers will be able to identify burst pipelines long before they actually happen. Therefore it is crucial to call a plumber as soon as you suspect that something is wrong. If your water bills are extremely high or if you hear the constant sound of running water when all your water fixtures are turned off – have a plumber check the premises and nip in the bud or rule out burst water pipes. Never wait for water to come out of your ceiling or wall to call a plumber.

Burst Pipeline: When it Starts

Even if water is still not dripping from the ceiling or wall, check for leaky sources by taking readings the water meter located at the front of your home in a concrete box.

Read your Water Meter
If all the taps are turned off, the washer is switched off, and you have not showered, bathed, used the toilet or dishwashed in the last couple of hours – but the star or triangle shaped device on the face of the water meter spins fast – water is running somewhere inside or outside your home.

Call a plumber ASAP to investigate the source of the running water – it may be a burst pipe hidden from view. Make sure to turn off the main water supply to your home to minimize water related damage.

However, the plumbing costs per hour differ from one another. The reason behind this is that each job has its own particular requirements, demanding differing levels of expertise. There are several situations that will influence the cost of plumbing.

Plumbing rates are affected by the following: nature of the job, parts to be replaced, time-frame, demolition and construction involved, digging involved, and the travel time of the plumber. The plumber will need to perform an onsite visit and access the source of the problem. To conclude a decent rate, the plumber will need to see the extent of the work, the materials needed to fix the problem, the deadline of the job and miscellaneous expenses such as license, permit, trucks, and tools.

The rates are higher for major plumbing works, like renovating an entire bathroom, moving a sink to a new location or redoing a kitchen. The rates of renovation work are often vastly different from those of new construction. It is best to contact several plumbers to ask for estimates and compare them.

For new construction and minor repair, the hourly plumbing rates usually range from fifty to over three hundred dollars per hour. The price depends on the size of the area and materials used. Some companies charge by square foot. It is your obligation to find the best company you can afford.

For fast and effective hourly plumbing rates, you can search online. Reputable plumbing companies have websites to provide homeowners easy access and convenience. You can ask for online quotes and even get a chance to chat with a professional. This is the fastest and easiest way to compare rates. All you need to do is visit the company’s website. Fill in the form, including the type of work, the service you need, completion date of the job and the location of your house. Yet for the most accurate hourly plumbing rates, it is most highly recommended to schedule an appointment with the company’s representative for an onsite visit.

According to UN reports, 400 million people are already facing severe water shortages, while many cities throughout the United States are predicted to be water stressed in next decades. The average American family of four people uses seven gallons of water on a weekly basis – equivalent to three years drinking water for one person. To avoid a water stressed future, water conservation should become top priority to all households, especially as conserving water saves significant amounts of money spent on residential water bills.

Plumbers offer the following tips to help people conserve water in their home:

Showering In, Bathing Out
When we shower we use less than 10 gallons of water compared to 25 gallons of water through bathing.

Low Flow Toilets
Old toilets use 3.5 gallons of water to flush out waste while low flow toilets use 1.6 or 1.28 gallons of water for flushing. In comparison to low flow units, 3.5 gallon toilets waste 14,000 gallons of water per year for a four member household.

Low Flow Shower Heads
Inexpensive and easily installed, low flow devices reduce the amount of water flowing through your shower by 50%. Aside from saving water, low flow shower heads increase the water's velocity so that water flow feels the same.

Faucet Aerators
Inexpensive and easily installed on all faucets, aerators limit the amount of water flowing through by up to 50%, but add bubbles to enhance water flow. Faucet aerators should not exceed the ideal 2.75 GPM value.

Early Leak Detection
A good way to save on water is early leak detection. Dripping faucets can waste about 180 gallons of water per month and 2,160 gallons annually while leaky toilets inflate water bills by up to $500. Paying close attention to water signs can help you detect early and repair fast leaky sources. As a thumb rule – when detecting a leak turn off the main water shut off valve to cut down water loss by stopping water supply to the faulty fixture.

A dripping water heater is frequently noticed when cold water is heated in the tank, and should disappear soon after to indicate condensation. But when a dripping water heater is not the result of condensation – plumbers need to investigate the leaky source.

A leaky water heater can result from the following causes:

A damaged temperature pressure relief (TPR) valve may be leaking out water, and will require immediate repair to prevent thermal expansion that will split open the tank. On the other hand, a perfectly functioning TPR may be discharging water because of excess pressure in tank due to high temperature settings or high water pressure.

Faulty drain valves will cause your water heater to leak out water. Plumbers will either tighten loose drain valves or replace them altogether.

In gas water heaters clogged vents may cause leaks. Unblocking obstructed vents will probably rectify the problem.

Electrical heaters may need to be installed with new heating element gasket to stop water leakage.

Incoming water pipes may be loosely connected to your water heater and leak out water in their fitting point. Plumbers will either tighten piping and fittings or replace with new pipes.

Corroded tanks seep out water. In such a case replacing with new units is the only remedy. If you are planning to buy a new water heater, consider the tankless units that are water and energy efficient and have a longer lifespan than conventional heaters.

Avail of the following tips by professional plumbers on how to avoid common plumbing problems in winter.

Outside Kitchen Sink Wall
Contractors install the kitchen's sink on the outside wall of the home so that you can enjoy the view while working around the sink. When temperatures drop water lines located on outside walls can easily freeze. Plumbers recommend opening cabinet doors and letting room temperatures flow inside cabinets. Warm air will prevent pipes from freezing. You can always increase temperatures by placing space heaters next to open doors of cabinets.

Septic Tank
Homeowners fail to check the levels of waste in their septic tank and experience unpleasant sewage backups when their tanks are overloaded with waste. Digging into frozen ground to access the cesspool and replacing frozen pipes will be much more expensive than having your septic system cleaned regularly. It is highly recommended to have your septic tank pumped out by a professional plumber before winter to avoid emergency backups.

Water Heater
Faulty parts, sediment deposits, and blown pilot pipes can all prevent your water heater from providing hot water. To avoid cold showers this winter have your water heater serviced by a professional plumber.

Freezing Pipes
Frozen pipes are the most frequent emergency plumbing problem that plumbers are called for in winter. Exposed plumbing pipes tend to freeze in low temperatures, and without immediate thawing they eventually bust. Before temperatures drop look for exposed pipes that need insulation and protection against the weather elements. Wrap heat tape around exposed pipes to keep water lines warm during winter.

Winterize Plumbing Fixtures not in Use
Outside toilets, showers and sinks that are not used during winter should be winterized to protect them from cracking and freezing in low temperatures. Shut water supply to exposed plumbing fixtures and drain out water from tanks and basins. Next, unscrew P-traps of external plumbing fixtures and empty water inside, after which reinstall the P-traps. You can always add non toxic anti-freeze to tanks and traps for more protection against freezing.

Professional plumbers have gathered helpful tips on how to maintain your garbage disposal clog free during and after Christmas.

Feed your garbage disposal small amounts of food a time. Overloading your disposer will put extra stress on the motor and will therefore increase chances of motor failure.

When operating your disposal run through cold water. Cold water keeps food waste solid for the blades to grind into small particles effectively. Wait 15 seconds after turning off the garbage disposer before closing off cold water flow. This will ensure that all food particles are flushed through the drain.

Pouring cooking grease down the disposal or grinding egg shells, large bones, rice, pasta, potatoes and fibrous food waste will clog your appliance. Coffee or tea bags contain acid. If grounded, that acid will be released and may damage the inside of the disposer.

Clean the cutting blades by grinding small ice cubes. Add a fresh sent to your kitchen by grinding citrus peels with ice.

Maintaining your garbage disposal trouble free will ensure that Christmas 2009 will be plumber free.

If you live in a cold climate, then you know that it is important to prevent frozen pipes. Frozen water pipes can cause extreme damage in your home and plumbing system if not stopped properly. The frozen water in your pipes will expand and begin to crack. Such cracks can trigger the bursting of frozen pipes, thereby causing tremendous damage to your house.

Experienced professionals believe that prevention is the primary method of stopping frozen pipes. The pipes that tend to freeze most frequently include: outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, water sprinkler lines, water supply lines in unheated areas and sewer pipes. The effects of frozen sewer pipes can be absolutely devastating. Thanks to modern plumbing, there are several ways to prevent plumbing frozen pipes. First, always drain the swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines. Second, remove, drain and store hoses that are used outside. Third, check around the area of the house for any
signs of frozen pipes. If you notice that there is no water flowing through a pipe, be sure to call a plumber immediately. Forth, hot and cold pipes should be insulated because hot water supply can also cause a frozen pipes burst. And lastly, keep the temperature set during both day and night, or apply heat cables to the pipe.

Thaw Frozen Pipes

If you suspect frozen pipes, the recommended course of action is to carefully inspect the surrounding area as soon as possible. In order to thaw frozen pipes properly, the suspected frozen area must be located in its entirety first. When thawing a frozen pipe, the running water through the pipe will actually help melt the ice. Be sure to keep the faucet open when you defrost frozen pipes.

Heating frozen pipes is often the best treatment. Apply heat to the entire section of the pipe that is frozen. You may use a towel and hot water to thaw the frozen pipe. Wrap the towel around the area and pour hot water on it. You can also use a hair dryer, a portable space heater or pipe thawing machines. However, do not use a blowtorch or any other open flame device to defrost frozen pipes. The blowtorch can make the water in the frozen pipes boil, causing the pipes to explode. Also keep in mind that open flame devices can cause a serious fire in your house. Do not put antifreeze on the water line. Antifreeze is dangerous to human, pets and the environment. For safety purposes during frozen pipes repair, it is best to hire plumbers.

If the frozen pipes are inaccessible or if you are unable to locate the frozen pipe area, call a professional right away. You need to have all frozen pipes defrosted because if one pipe is still frozen, the others may freeze too.

For increased protection, relocate all exposed water lines to prevent them from freezing. Additional insulation will also maintain high temperature and reduce the probability of your having frozen pipes.

Your water meter is a helpful tool to monitor your monthly water consumption. Another good starting point to residential water conservation is the replacement of water wasting faucets and showerheads with their water efficient counterparts.

The volumetric flow rate of your shower head or faucet is measured in gallons per minute (GPM). The Federal Energy Policy Act of 1992 required all faucets and showerheads to have a water efficient flow rate of no more than 2.2 GPM at 60 PSI. Yet toilets, faucets and shower heads and other fixtures bought and installed before 1992 waste as much as 10 GPM. The following guiding steps are provided by professional plumbers to calculate the GPM of your water fixtures:

Position a container under faucet or shower head
Turn on fixture for 10 seconds and collect water in container
Measure the quantity of water collected in 10 seconds and convert units to gallons
Multiply the gallon measurements by 6 to get the GPM value.

Plumbing fixtures with flow rates greater than 2.2 GPM will need to be replaced with low flow units that will cut down your water usage by as much as 40%. The reduction in your water consumption will show up nicely in lower than average water bills. The following table summarizes how much water you save with water efficient fixtures.

Instead of heating and storing hot water in a tank where heat escapes through the walls of the tank – a tankless unit heats water on demand without the use of the traditional storage tank. Supplying hot water when needed means that a tankless unit saves you the cost of standby heat loss associated with conventional tank water heaters.

Because of their energy efficient ability to provide hot water only when needed, tankless units are also called demand or instantaneous water heaters. Upon detecting an open hot water faucet, a flow sensor will activate the tankless system. Cold water is fed through the tankless unit and a series of heating exchangers will heat the water until the flow sensor detects that the hot water faucet has been switched off.

As tankless heaters are activated for a few minutes each day as opposed to tank water heaters that cycle on and off throughout the entire day – tankless units are responsible for long term energy saving and cut energy costs by approximately 30 to 50%. In contrast to traditional water heaters that overheat stored tanked water to ensure a continuous supply of hot water, tankless heaters provide an ongoing supply of hot water on demand for additional energy savings and a reduction of sediment related problems commonly experienced with tank units. Less vulnerable to mineral and sediment accumulation, tankless water heaters last as much as 10 years longer than standard tank units and are therefore backed up by much longer warranties.

Proper sizing and professional installation are major factors determining the complete optimization of tankless energy efficiency. It is highly recommended to hire skilled, heating plumbers for the sizing and installation work to ensure maximum energy efficiency of your tankless heater. Saving space, money and energy - tankless water heaters are the green solution to high residential heating costs.

In fact, it is generally much more expensive to renovate old plumbing systems that were built many years ago. The reason for this is because the work involved in renovating old plumbing is more labor intensive. Old tiles must be removed and pipes must be upgraded in order for them to meet the new standards of plumbing systems.

The plumbing costs for new houses are more affordable because it is easier for plumbers to install new plumbing. Plumbing contractors need to look at the house, measure the size of the area, calculate the cost of materials and review the plumbing codes before they can provide you with decent quotes. The average plumbing costs for new houses ranges between ten thousand to fifteen thousand dollars. Of course, these figures are subject to change and will depend on the materials you want. Everything always depends on the size of the house, the quality of the product and the amount of elements to install or repair.

To give you a concise review of common plumbing costs, the average cost per fixture is between five hundred to one thousand dollars. Add to that the labor rate of plumbers, which is usually twenty to thirty dollars an hour. Usually it will take five to seven days to install new plumbing. Of course, it also depends on the size of the bathroom, the number of bathrooms, kitchen area and any other area of the house where you want to have water access.

Other factors that will influence the plumbing costs for new houses include the type of pipes to use, the permits to obtain, connections, joints and support for pipes and miscellaneous expenses. All in all, hiring professional plumbing contractors to install your plumbing system can be costly, but they can ensure quality installation and will guarantee the workmanship of their job.

To get an idea of residential plumbing costs, you can search online for free quotes and estimates from various plumbers. All plumbing problems are better left to licensed plumbing contractors with the right equipment and years of experience to solve them without causing further damage, as the case with many DIY repairs.

Gas Plumbing Pipes
Treating gas lines is by no means a do it yourself job. Not only do we not posses the right gear to check for gas leaks, but we also lack the professional skill to work, twist and turn the actual pipes. The danger in working with gas pipelines is so high that most likely we'll not want to attempt any "repair experiments" in an environment of uncertainty and danger. Further still is the issue of pipe tightening. We might think that our pipe connections need to be tightened when in fact this is the last thing we ought to do. Any good plumber knows that unnecessary tightening may trigger an explosion and irreversible damage, but of course without this valuable knowledge you may end up blowing up your home.

Water Supply
In some cases the curb-stop (see water meter) needs to be closed. Needless to say, it requires special equipment found only on professional plumbers. Likewise, a plumbing flood or a water leak and damp walls will be solved effectively only by professional plumbers.

In Conclusion - When Should You Call A Plumber?
In general, once you feel comfortable working with specific equipment and when you have the relevant knowledge - can you try solving plumbing problems such as sink stoppages, clogged toilets or blocked drains. But know that there are risks involved with D.I.Y solutions. Always consult with plumbing professionals before attempting a do-it-yourself solution. Many professional plumbers will be more than happy to guide you over the phone, and if needed, also come to your rescue if the problem takes a turn for the worst.

Plastic pipes last between 25 to 100 years, outperforming other piping materials by years.

Types of Plastic Pipes

When shopping for plastic pipes you will encounter the following names:

PVC/CPVC = Rigid and white, PVC is the most popular choice for plastic piping. PVC pieces can be fused together with heat or connected together with thread or solvent weld (glue). PVC is used for cold water lines while CPVC is used for hot water.

PolyEthylene (PE) = PE is a colorless, flexible plastic that can be bend around corners, eliminating the need for fittings. PE is frequently used as a supply line for sprinkler systems. It is also termed PEX in water supply.

ABS = Rigid, black piping material used for drain lines. Cheaper to install than PVC.

The following checklist should be carried out twice a year to maintain the good order of your home plumbing and nip in the bud any potential plumbing complication. It is highly recommended to have a professional plumber close by in case a plumbing problem spins out of control.

1. Look for signs of water leaks along external pipes, where pipes run through walls or under the foundation of your home. Click the following link for leak detection information.

2. Look for signs of pipe corrosion that can eat away the piping material and cause water to leak out. Click the link for visible signs of pipe corrosion.

3. Test water pressure in faucets and showerheads. Poor water pressure may indicate sediment accumulation or a problem in the water supply line. Click water pressure for the causes and solutions of low water pressure.

4. Check the speed of drainage in sinks, bathtubs and showers. Drains should have a full swirl when draining. Slow drainage may indicate a blocked drainpipe. If bubbles appear while water is draining out, this is also a sign of a problematic drain. Click for more information on drains.

5. Flush each toilet and check for proper flushing. Open the tank and check for rusty or broken parts. Check that water does not continue to run after flushing and make sure there is no sign of water pooling around the base of the toilet.

6. Check for mildew in moist areas of the home such as bathrooms or basements.

7. Look for loose or cracked tiles in bathrooms or near water pipes. Fractured or slack tiles are caused by old or active water leaks that rot the surface behind the tile.

8. Call a professional water heater contractor to drain the storage tank and remove inside sediment buildup.

Need a professional plumbing maintenance inspection? Simply submit your job request and receive multiple plumbing estimates from plumbers in your area that offer professional maintenance checkups.

The need for professional plumber help cannot be anticipated, but it is extremely important to give it thought before an emergency strikes.

Many people get carried away and hire cheap plumbing services without checking out the credibility of the company. Implications can be disastrous both to your plumbing system as to your wallet. Plumbing work is often sub-standard, and needs to be redone at added costs, because the plumber help that you have called does not have the qualification to tackle the problem professionally. At the end of the day, you have to turn to a reliable, registered and professional plumber service, which can solve your problem and also rectify the harm done by some unprofessional plumbers.

Every consumer should be aware of the problems which can occur by taking the services of a cheap and unqualified plumber. It is not rocket science to find a good and reliable plumbing service, and the internet is a great starting place. Leading online plumbing directories, including Aplumbers, provide multiple plumbing estimates at the click of the mouse. Another way of locating a professional plumbing service is by inquiring from friends, neighbors and family, who have experienced a reliable plumbing service for themselves. This is an old-fashioned method of locating reliable services, but it is the most effective one.

Once you have located an accredited plumbing service, you can be assured that any kind of plumbing service for you is just a phone call away. Prepare a list of questions so you can judge by the answers how professional the plumbing service providers are. Check out the credentials of the plumbers, their certificates and official papers testifying their skills and ask for references from previous jobs and employers. Make sure that you are made aware of all the charges that will be levied when the plumber comes to your property. If you follow these steps meticulously you will surely find one of the best plumbing services to suit your budget.

The standard plumbing rates of professionals who just started out in the business is usually between twelve dollars and twenty dollars. However, this rate may also depend on the nature of the work. For major plumbing repairs and renovations, the hourly rates may increase.

The more experience and training the plumbers gain, the more expensive their hourly rates will be. For example, as a plumber becomes a full time professional and develops his skills, his rate will increase to fifteen dollars per hour and may even reach as high as twenty dollars per hour. For a high end plumber who has been in the business for more than twenty years and is known for providing high quality service, the rate can go up to twenty and even twenty five dollars per hour. But remember, these figures are based on the standard plumbing rates, meaning that they are applicable for minor repairs such as leaks, holes and cracks. The rates are different for renovations projects and fixture replacements. It is best to have extra cash in case there are problems that you do not know of. Some problems may not be visible to the eyes of a normal person.

You may search online for the standard plumbing rates of repairing toilets, taps, radiators, showers, baths, basins and other common plumbing repairs. Also, you can search online for the materials and labor fees of the work. Note that every job will have a different price. It is best to give a specific description of the problem if you want to get good plumbing rates. Provide as much information about the job as you can. If possible, perform your own assessment of the plumbing system. If you do not know the cause of the problem, set an appointment with the company’s representative. The plumber will need to examine the problem and locate the source. He will need to assess the situation before he can give you a decent plumbing price.

First of all you must have complete understanding of the needs and values of the market that you have to target. Check out the needs of the customer; write them down, because that is how you can calculate the best returns that you will get from your marketing investment. Your business benefits will totally be dependent on the niche of plumbing that you choose after the survey.

The best place for marketing any kind of business today is the internet. Radio, television and phone-books have become obsolete, as most people turn to their computer sets for any kind of information. There are online directories specifically for plumbing advertising - for example aplumbers.com offers affordable online advertising solution to plumbers in the United States.

A good marketing strategy is to create a website to which all the marketing traffic can be diverted to. The website will emphasize the benefits of your services and provide information resources for the customer. In case the website is not successful, it is possible for you to change the content, expand on it so that you can better business.

If you are not a creative person, invest in a creative graphic designer who will make attractive ads for you, so that your website attracts visitors. Give all the particulars of your company on the website like your telephone and web address, so that anybody reading your ad can establish contact with you easily.

Make your website as attractive as possible, because if you can drive ample traffic to it, your plumbing business will prosper. Invest in it well and take ideas from existing advertising sites online meant for plumbing business as well. If you get enough business online, you can then shift to outdoor advertising, which will help you to expand your business faster.

(Click for more information on plumbing costs). In general, payments to plumbers are so diverse, because there are no fixed prices for repairing clogged drains, blocked toilets or leaking pipes. No plumber in the US is ready to give a quote on the phone even for simple plumbing jobs. They can only give you an estimate after the technician has surveyed the work that has to be done.

After paying off the plumber, a dilemma arises: is the plumber expecting a tip? Are there some unwritten rules about tipping plumbers?

Most of the plumbing companies do not find it necessary to tip the plumbers every time. If a customer is satisfied with the work, he normally calls the main office and mentions the quality and the service that the plumber has offered them. Plumber tipping is not common practice for all.

Nevertheless, there is no harm in tipping a plumber, if the customer feels that the job has been exceptional, because no plumbing job is really pleasant and sometimes it is quite difficult too. Plumbing companies bear no ill will against their plumbers if they receive a tip from a satisfied customer, and it does not violate company policy in any way.

There will always be buildings, and water running through it, which requires constant maintenance and repair. Let us see what plumber qualifications are necessary to make this career a success.

Any kind of plumber training basically covers five areas related to the water system, which are steam fitting, pipefitting, plumbing, sprinkler fitting and pipe laying. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, plumbers should specialize in one of the above areas. Most people are not aware that plumbers are a part of the construction trade, though everyone at some time or another has needed help from a plumber.

A construction plumber can install and repair various kinds of pipes as well as any kind of fixture or appliance which is connected to the water system. Every building uses different kinds of pipes, whether it is a residential or a commercial building. The pipes are used for drain systems, gas systems or water pipe systems. The plumber can also install and repair bathtubs, showers, sinks, toilets and water heaters.

A plumber's training includes knowledge of the pipes and the various kinds of material used for them. Pipes are made of copper, steel, cast-iron and plastic and the plumber should know what is best used in which place. For installation of pipes and pipe fittings, he must know how to read blueprints, because he may have to cut through walls or floors to install the pipes. Besides, a plumber must be well–versed in the rules and regulations regarding local, state, or federal plumbing codes. Also, he must be polite and patient when he is dealing with his clients.

It is easy to join the profession through plumber apprentice programs, but the armed forces and community or junior colleges can also be helpful. For a good plumbing career it is best to begin with a comprehensive apprenticeship program, as it is an ideal combination of classroom instruction and practical training. Several apprenticeship programs are offered by union and non-union organizations lasting up to 5 years. It is advisable to acquire a license through the state before applying for a job or being self-employed, as every city, county or state carries its own rules and regulations.

Some fittings are also used to stop water flow. Each plumbing fitting has a specific function to fulfill, for example joints or elbows for pipes or tee and cross fittings.

The most commonly used plumber fitting is the elbow joint. If you want to change the direction of the water flow, an elbow joint can be fitted at a 45-degree or a 90-degree angle. Sinks make use of elbow joints or similar fixtures in which the water flows into a drain leading to the septic tank or the sewer system. The ends of the elbow may be in the form of a socket or welded, and sometimes threaded. The street elbow is a kind of elbow joint which uses male to female threads.

Another kind of plumbing fitting is the tee joint which is used to control water flow, because it mainly combines or divides the flow. Most tee joints are the same size on both ends, but for some the inlet and outlet sizes of the joint are different. This kind of joint is also known as a reducer joint. Sometimes tee joints are used for computer components.

A third category of plumbing fitting is the cross joint. Cross joints are used for sprinkler systems because they have three inlet valves and one outlet valve or three outlet valves and one inlet valve. Cross joints are not commonly a part of general plumbing in a home, as they cost considerably more than the multiple tee joints.

Besides joints the other commonly used plumbing fittings are caps and plugs. If you want to close the end of a pipe, you can use a cap or a plug. Both serve the same purpose, the only difference lies in the way it fits on to the pipe. A cap has to be fitted over the ends of the pipe and is screwed in by threading. Plugs, on the other hand, fit into the end of a pipe. But both are generally well fixed so that no gas or water can pass through.

To clean pipes, plumbers sometimes use clean-outs. Just for a temporary phase a clean-out can be installed in such a place so that a pipe snake can be inserted into the pipe to remove any clogs. Hence, after cleaning the pipes, the clean-outs can be removed. That is why they are just a temporary fixture.

The most common material used for plumbing fittings are plastic, metal or PVC. If your old house has copper drains, the fittings may be made of copper or metal. It is quite easy to buy plumbing fittings at any home improvement center and then bring it home and fix it with the help of specialized glues and adhesives, used only by plumbers.

However, if you are careful and check out even your small leaks, you can save a lot of time, money and headaches. Here are some simple methods to detect water leaks. Although these are relatively simply tasks, it is always recommended to contact a professional plumber for tips and guidance.

The hot water tank is the first thing that you should look into. The pressure relief valve needs to be checked, and even a hissing sound will help you to identify the smallest leak. The toilets are easy to check as well by identifying a hissing sound from the top of the tank. The lid has to be removed and if you can locate the sound and it is a small leak, it may be possible for you to repair it. Otherwise a plumber is required.

Use leak detectors for identifying leaks. Add food coloring into the tank and if the color leaks into the bowl, you have just detected a water leak. Once you know exactly where the leak is, try and repair it on your own, otherwise call a plumber.Carry out the same experiment in all your toilets.

If there is no leak in the toilets, try and check out the entire line from the water meter to your house. There may be a pool of water somewhere or a portion of the grass in the garden may be greener or muddier than the rest. There might be a leak somewhere and you may be lucky to find it. In this way you can save the expenses of a plumber. Check the meter thoroughly by shutting off the valve to the house, and if it is still running, there is a defect in the meter, or in the pipe between the meter and the house. Naturally if the meter stops moving once you have shut off the valve, then the leak is definitely in the house. These simple techniques will help you to locate the leak on your own.

If you now have to detect a water leak inside your house, begin with the hose bibs, which are pipes into which the hoses are hooked. Look under the kitchen sink, bathroom shower, water tank and bathroom sinks. Put the metal end of a screwdriver on the metal part of the hose-bib.By placing your thumb knuckle on top of the screwdriver, place your knuckle on the side of your head just in front of your ear. As the sound travels directly to your ear drum, the screwdriver acts like a stethoscope and you can hear all the sounds inside the hose-bib. If the sound is loud, you are close to the leak, otherwise you move on to the next hose-bib. Mark the leak with a chalk, so that you can direct your plumber to the exact location of the leak. You can carry out the same procedure with the hose bibs in the bathrooms.

Check the condition of the hose, the taps and the drip irrigation systems in the garden. The shower heads are also prone leaks. A swimming pool needs to be checked for leaks as well.

It is often difficult to locate a leak, and plumbers aren't always successful either. But if you can manage to find an approximate location, it is a great help for the plumber and can certainly benefit you as well. Sometimes it may be easy to fix a leak with a little help from DIY equipment, but if you are not used to carrying out plumbing tasks, it is best to bring in a professional plumber.

Job opportunities are excellent, and plumbers are always in demand. If there is any problem with the plumbing system, only a professional plumber can be counted on to properly install or repair the pipes in the kitchen and bathroom.

The average salary of a national plumber was approximately $ 50,000 per annum last year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Naturally there are low-paid plumbers and highly-paid plumbers. The minimum plumber yearly salary was $27,600 and the maximum salary was $79,470.

The annual pay scale for plumbers is rated according to their experience. If a plumber has five to nine years of experience, he would earn between $40,000 and $70,000 per annum. With 10 to 19 years of experience the range would be approximately the same. But plumbers having experience of 20 years or more command an annual salary between $ 50,000 and $ 80,000.

Most plumbers are employed by building equipment contractors and plumber income is in the range of $ 50,000 a year. Other industries which employ plumbers are the utility system construction, the nonresidential building construction, the local government and the natural gas distribution. Plumber wages in all these sectors are on the same level.

The highest paying industry to plumbers is the glass and glass product manufacturing industry, where the plumber average salary is $ 70,000. Other top-paying industries are motor vehicle manufacturing, motor vehicle parts manufacturing, other miscellaneous manufacturing, museums, historical sites and similar institutions.

The highest plumber income is possible in Illinois with about $70,000 a year. Other top-paying locations are Alaska, Massachusetts, New Jersey and the District of Columbia.

It can save you a lot of money and you can prevent an emergency plumbing breakdown in the middle of the winter season. If you service and maintain your plumbing regularly, the chances of a plumbing problem are greatly reduced.

In order to carry out regular maintenance it is important for you to hire reliable plumbing contractors. Hire plumbers who have a license and are bonded, because unprofessional plumbers may be cheaper initially, but do not guarantee you good quality work. A professional and experienced plumber will have the knowledge and the skill to conduct thorough maintenance of the plumbing system, and will be using modern technical equipment for job.

However, there are some simple plumbing tips that you can follow in order to prevent an emergency plumbing situation. Firstly, it is important to prevent any blocks in your sewers, because if there are sewer backups, there can be major problems. Do not throw diapers, paper towels, hygiene products, wet towels, food or any other debris into the sewer line. Secondly, tree roots can cause severe plumbing problems by damaging the sewer lines. A plumber can identify the location of the tree roots and repair the damage.

Thirdly, avoid pouring grease through the kitchen sink as it can block the drains after a period of time. Dispose of it in the trash can. Also, no grease should be poured down the toilet as well, as it can block the sewage lines.

These tips can help you to save money on emergency plumbers. Before an emergency plumbing situation arises it is best to contact your plumbing contractor as soon as you experience any kind of problem, so that you can prevent a more serious situation.

Regardless of what happens to the economy, plumbing problems are addressed without much delay. This may be one of the reasons why a lot of people are venturing into the plumbing profession. So basically how much are the usual plumbing labor rates and how are they determined?

Keep in mind that plumbing rates differ from one contractor to another. Plumbers affiliated with labor unions earn more than those who are not. Experienced plumbers also have higher pay rates than apprentices.
It can be confusing to know the average plumbing labor rates. As listed in the annual salary for plumbers in the US, people in the plumbing profession earn about $27,000 per year. However, this figure is common to all people in the plumbing industry. Remember that plumbers’ helpers and master plumbers have different rates. A plumber’s helper only earns $18,000 per year while a master plumber earns as much as $47,000 per year.

Those new to the plumbing profession will earn a salary as they work. As mentioned above, a plumber’s helper can earn about $18,000 a year but as he progresses into a plumber's helper, he can earn as much as $25,000 a year. This would pay a plumber $9 - $12 per hour.

Once a person becomes a full fledged plumber, he can take home about $30,000 a month. For plumbing professionals who possess specialized skills, such as oil and GA specialists, they can earn about $33,000 annually. Senior trade plumbers, plumber pipefitters, commercial plumbers also earn more than $30,000 per year. These yearly rates come out to hourly rates of $15 - $19.

High end plumbers, those who have been in the business for many years and are able to gain the trust of a large number of clients, can have an annual income of $40,000 – $50,000. They will have hourly rates of between $20 and $25. Specialized plumbing positions in this salary range include plumbing technicians, plumbing workers, licensed journey man plumbers, and some others.

You should know that the figures are based on a 40-hour work week, so basically they are merely base pays. Since some plumbers work more than 40 hours per week, their income can increase significantly. In fact, those that provide less than 40 hours of service per week can earn less than the figures listed above.

Here are some tips to help you to identify trustworthy plumbing services.

If plumbers send you a quote without making a visual inspection, it is the first sign of a possible scam. In any case you should only accept a detailed written estimate from the plumbing contractor before starting the job. Do not accept any kind of verbal contracts.
Plumbers sometimes tend to use pressure or scare tactics especially for elderly people and then increase plumbing costs unnecessarily. Also, midway through the job if the plumber decides to change the contract, it is apparent that he is not a professional plumber.

Furthermore, plumbing costs may differ from one plumber to another, but if one plumbing company gives unusually low quotes, it could be a cause for suspicion and needs to be checked out. Plumbers who only take cash or under-the-table payments are also to be avoided, as they do not give a receipt for their work.

Any plumbing services that you take should be from a plumbing company which has identification and preferably referrals. Plumbers who ask for high prepayment may not be trustworthy; just 10 percent prepayment for a job could be accepted.

A good plumbing contractor should begin with a plumbing consultation. After discussing your needs and expectations of the repair or renovation job, he should provide you with a written quote containing the details of the job and the costs. Also, plumbers should be able to provide you with answers to all your questions. There is no standard price list for plumbing services, but the hourly rates are between $45 and $65, and emergency plumbing services are rated higher.

A drain trap is present in floor drains, sinks or toilets where there is a dip in the drain pipe. Normally the drain trap should always remain filled with water, but if it gets damaged, clogged or old it must be cleaned, repaired or replaced. In order to do that you can follow some guidelines, or, alternatively, call a professional plumber to take care of the malfunction.

A set of tools is necessary to remove the drain trap, used for normal plumbing problems like a screwdriver, wrench, a bucket and an old towel. The drain trap is a delicate plumbing fixture and should be removed with care to prevent damage.

Shut off the main water supply or the water valve which is under the sink, so that you can stop water from flowing through the drain pipe. Use the bucket to allow the surplus water from the drain trap to flow into it, when it is removed. Use the towels around the bucket, so that the surrounding area does not become messy.

The drain pipe is secured with a nut to the bottom of the sink which can be opened with a wrench. Once the nut is loose, the entire pipe can be pulled down, so that it can be removed easily. Once you can reach the trap, unscrew it carefully. Sometimes there may be a clean-out plug at the end of the drain-pipe, which has to be loosened as well. Extract the drain trap, lifting it in a horizontal position.

The drain trap is an important plumbing fixture and should be cleaned and maintained regularly to prevent sewage gas from escaping. Residential plumbing can be looked after by your local plumber and if there are serious problems with drains or traps it is best to get them repaired by professional plumbers who have the expertise and the proper equipment.

Mainly, a plumber is exposed dangerous substances in the environment, for example various chemical hazards. Chemicals like asbestos and lead can be hazardous to the health. Hence it is important for all plumbers to undergo health risks training, so that they know exactly what they are up against.

Electrical shock can also pose as a hazard for plumbers if they work in places which have many electrical connections. If the place is wet, the risk increases. Hence the plumber should use power tools with a ground fault circuit interpreter, which can be used in a wet environment. The risk is greater when he comes into contact with metal pipes, so even if there is a slight sensation, work should be stopped immediately.

Plumbers have to work often in cramped and dark environments being exposed to high levels of hydrogen sulfide and less oxygen. Plumbers should try to circulate fresh air wherever possible at their place of work to avoid any serious health hazard.

Use of eye goggles during any kind of cutting or grinding tools is a part of plumbing safety. Also, all the work equipment and tools should be well maintained and kept in running condition. Regular breaks are necessary during work, especially if the work is long and demanding. Working in hazardous environments and conditions will take a toll on the plumber’s health.

When you hire a plumber, make sure that he has been recommended by somebody you know and trust, and that he possesses a license. Such plumbers are not only trained for their professional plumbing skills but are also trained to take precautions against common and typical plumbing hazards.

His job is to carry out inspections of plumbing work. He is a professional licensed plumber who also has a certification for working as an inspector. He checks work that has been done by licensed professionals to ensure that it is safe and legal. He can specialize in either residential plumbing or commercial plumbing or both.

A plumbing inspection involves not only a thorough check-up of the plumbing jobs which are carried out, but also checking the credentials of the plumbers or the plumbing services. He usually checks vents, traps, faucets, fixtures and lines, and any fault has to be corrected. Proof of licenses has to be shown to the inspector.

When building renovations take place, the plumbing inspector plays an important role. If old plumbing systems are renovated, sometimes just repair is not possible, and the entire plumbing system may need replacement. The plumber inspector can check the safety and legality of such systems, because a mistake can not only be costly, but dangerous as well. Also, sometimes inspectors are called when some problem in the plumbing system develops and cannot be identified.

Plumbing inspectors require plenty of field work, but on the other hand, they can also work as plumbing plans examiners. When a plumbing layout is proposed by a builder, the examiner checks whether it is in compliance with the plumbing code and then approves it for the building permit. On site, the examiner matches the proposed and approved plumbing plan with the actual plumbing to check that there have been no changes.

Plumbing inspectors have a moral responsibility to curb any kind of illegal activity so that public health and safety are well protected.

In a commercial building it is generally one person’s responsibility to take care of the plumbing, so others don’t give much thought to it.

Plumbing services are divided into two kinds of plumbing, residential and commercial plumbing. When you are in need of a plumber, you must call the right plumber, who has been trained for the job that you are calling him for.

The plumbing problems related to residential and commercial plumbing are very similar, like broken toilets, leaking pipes or even pipes that have burst. Some jobs can be done by both plumbers; they can troubleshoot and repair with the same kinds of plumber tools. But, sometimes there is a difference in the pipe connections, the complexity of design or the cause of the problems and this makes the regular work of a residential plumber different from a commercial one.

It is best to hire a plumber who is trained and experienced to tackle both residential and commercial plumbing. A good plumber can adapt himself to the situation and can offer plumbing services everywhere, because he has experienced repair problems in different situations. A leaky faucet is only what you are seeing; the plumber discovers that there is a problem in the entire foundation of pipes.

A commercial plumber generally has more exposure to a variety of plumbing problems than a residential plumber, who may be carrying out repair regularly, but limited to standard residential plumbing repairs. Most of the time, we are asking for specialists in every field, but as far as plumbers are concerned, it is better to have someone who has an overview of the entire problem, understands it and then solves the plumbing problem at short notice.

Sprinkler heads tend to get stuck, if they are not cleaned and maintained regularly. For automatic irrigation, the sprinkler heads are the pop-up variety and their heads often get stuck in the ‘up’ position especially if the water is hard. Often a car or a lawn mower can also break the head. It is best to keep a supply of extra heads, which you can fix yourself.

Tree roots can cause havoc in your plumbing system because they can just break through the strong pipes. If there is water oozing somewhere in the lawn or if the water pressure is unusually low, it indicates a problem in the plumbing system. A professional plumber can tackle the problem at an early stage with specialized plumbing tools, because if you wait too long, the damages will be bigger and the cost as well.

Clogged toilets are another common problem, especially if there are kids at home. Since the toilets are used and flushed continuously, it is not uncommon for them to get clogged sometimes. You can clean a clogged toilet with a wire hanger and remove the excess toilet paper from the base of the bowl. Use a plunger, so that the detritus is forced through the pipes. But if the clog has happened due to some foreign objects in the toilet, or your cleaning-up is not successful, you have to resort to a plumber who is familiar with residential plumbing.

Some summer problems regarding plumbing may be easy to solve on your own, whereas others may be serious and take some time to repair and may require professional plumbers. Keep the contact number of some plumbing services always at hand.

Prevention is better than cure, and if you therefore follow some simple steps, you can prevent mildew at home completely and always. Professional plumbers who are thoroughly familiar with mildew problems can give you more helpful advice.

If there are any leaks in the house, like in the faucet, arrange to have it fixed immediately. If you buy a sink rebuilding kit from your local hardware store, you can easily rebuild your faucets. They should be completely turned off after usage, so that no moisture accumulates in the corners, for this can result in the growth of mildew.

Check the places in your house which have the highest chances of growing mildew. Areas like sinks, bathtubs and laundry rooms are exposed to a great deal of moisture. In order to keep such places free of mildew, allow some fresh air to come into these areas through a door or a window on a regular basis.
Clothes may also get mildew. So, if any clothing is wet, you need to get it dry by hanging it up immediately rather than placing it in the closet or cupboard. After the shower, hang up your towel so that air can pass through it well. Otherwise, if you leave wet clothes in the laundry basket, it gathers mildew and it further spreads to the other clothes.

Though the prevention of mildew is not easy, it is worth going through a little bit of trouble in order to prevent the consequence of an infestation. After all, the tips will help you to combat the problem in an easy manner, because there are many ways to do it. If it is done regularly, your house can be free from mildew forever.

If your mildew problems persist even after you have taken all the necessary measures, consult your local plumbers on additional solutions, or have them come over and survey the scene themselves.

Follow this check list and you can detect the problem quite fast and efficiently too.

Foul odors are the first indication of a septic tank leak. We often tend to ignore the foul odors, by thinking that the odor is either from within the house, or from waste water. Actually you might often believe that the odor is emanating from your waste water fixtures, and overlook it, just like the foul odor coming from your septic tank outside your house.

If the septic tank is making peculiar noises, as if there is a struggle inside it to move the waste products, there is something wrong. Sometimes there may be gurgling noises inside the tank and the strange noises occur when you are flushing the toilet, running the bathtub water or sink or even running the washing machine.

If the septic tank is leaking near your lawn or somewhere in your property, there are bound to be some spots where there is no grass growing or just being permanently wet. This should send you a message that there is something wrong with your septic tank and should be looked into immediately.

There could be other obvious indications as well, but some of these clues would tell you that there is a leak in your septic tank. If you sense any kind of problem, it is best to take professional help from plumbing services. The possible solutions have to be researched and most of the time, the kind of work involving septic tank repair can only be handled by plumbers who are used to such plumbing problems.

When you turn on the water in a faucet, the flow of water may be hampered, which is a sign that there is air in the water pipe. The water may come out in spurts, it may make all sorts of noises, and takes some time to flow out.

There is a very simple way to solve the problem. Check that the main water supply in your house has been turned on and then turn on every faucet in your house. Flush the toilets, place a cup on the water dispenser of your refrigerator, or on any other plumbing fixture in your house which has a water connection.

Turn on all the hot and cold water taps. Don’t forget the shower baths, the washing machine and the dishwasher in the kitchen. The water will flow out for a very short while. Within a minute, the noises in the faucets will cease and water will begin to flow naturally. Go up to the uppermost floor and begin to turn off the water connections that you had turned on. In this way, work your way down to the water faucet of the lower-most floor.

The procedure is simple, but you need to be patient and turn on all the faucets and then systematically turn everything off once the noise stops. If you have any questions or concerns about the procedure, it is always a good idea to consult professional plumbers.

The wear and tear of plumbing as well as digging may cause plumbing problems in the long run.

In order to prevent outdoor plumbing problems it is important to get your backyard plumbing problems organized. Color code the pipes in your diagram, so that any kind of work done in future can use the diagram as reference and avoid serious damages.

Exposed pipes break in course of time as they become brittle. Irrigation pipes are often exposed to the sun, which can break down the pipe. Avoid using cheap UV-pipes and use covering for pipes wherever possible for longer life.

Roots are a major hindrance to outdoor plumbing. They can cause stress on the pipe, get into pipe joints and cause leaks. You can install plastic root guards around the roots when you are planting a tree. Root guards are available in a variety of sizes and can prevent problems because they redirect lateral tree roots deeper into the soil.

In areas with severe winters, hose bibs freeze and irrigation back flow is prevented due to the cold. When water freezes in the pipe, the pipe expands and breaks. If you install another valve inside your house, the problem with the hose bibs can be prevented. You can then turn off the water inside and then put on the bib so that the water in the line can be drained and the outside pipe does not freeze. If you install insulation your back flow can be prevented as well. But, before water starts freezing, you should drain and turn off the irrigation lines, so that the pipeline has no water in it.

Educate your gardener about handling the sprinklers, because sprinkler breaks can easily be avoided if the gardener is careful while mowing the lawn or using his shovel.

To prevent outdoor plumbing problems and emergencies, ask professional plumbers to conduct regular maintenance checks of your outdoor plumbing fixtures and appliances.

Not only are they allow the employees to drink, but they constitute a good reason for getting up from the desk every once in a while. Before purchasing and installing a cooler, there are some technical factors to consider.

The traffic area for your drinking fountain will determine your water flow. Heavy traffic would require a water flow of eight gallons per hour, for example, so that the water cooler can always keep the water chilled. Vandalism is a common problem in heavy traffic areas, for which vandal-resistant water coolers are available.

If you have to meet state and federal requirements defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), you have to install a bi-level water cooler which is accessible to wheelchair users as well. Besides the height, the location of the cooler is important. If it is located outside, it needs a special finish to combat corrosion. If temperatures are freezing, a freeze-resistant valve system has to be incorporated.

The choice between a chilled and a non-refrigerated water cooler is the existence of a cooling system. If a power source is not readily available, non-refrigerated fountains are installed. The plumbing fixtures are dependent on the model used, whether the fountain is wall-mounted or floor-mounted. Check out the commercial plumbing of the area to ascertain the plumbing lines that can be used for the water-cooler. The brand, price, style and design of the water-cooler or fountain will be entirely according to your needs, because there is a huge variety in the market.

A replacement of a water-cooler or a fountain is easiest if it is the same brand, because the plumbing system often matches it well. But, if another brand meets your preference, you can always adjust the plumbing to the new system. Consult your commercial plumbers before selecting the perfect cooler for your office.

Out with the old, in with the new: Removing your garbage disposal

Wear and tear of a garbage disposal is common, and as soon as it starts becoming loud, it is time for you to replace it with a new one. The entire procedure is quite simple.

Safety for the plumbers is important when the replacement of the garbage disposal is done. The power for the circuit for the garbage disposal unit should be shut off from the main circuit breaker, before they start working on it.

Clear the area below the sink, so that there is enough room to work on the plumbing fixtures. Disconnect the wires leading to the garbage disposal by loosening the screws which are holding the panel in place, removing the wire nuts and electrical tape at the end of the wires. The terminal screw where the green or bare copper is connected should be loosened as well.

After the wires, the plumbing has to be disconnected. Sometimes there may be more than one plumbing connection, of which the first connection or the larger pipe is generally to the drain pipe. This could be rigid or flexible. The coupling on the end of the pipe needs to be loosened with a wrench, and removed completely. The second connection is generally the dishwasher connection. At the end of the drain hose there is a hose clamp and this should be pulled off the disposal nipple.

On the lower edge of the disposal you will find a Phillips screw or an Allen crew, which needs to be loosened. As soon as that is done, the garbage disposal can be removed by turning it in a clockwise direction. It is possible that there is another locking ring too which needs to be loosened, so that the unit can come off. Remove installation rings and remove the entire unit to replace it with a new one.

Since garbage disposals can be quite dangerous if not handled properly, it is best to leave their repair in the hands of experienced plumbers.

The main function of a bath and shower head diverter is to balance the pressure of the water, controlling the hot/cold mixture ratio. Generally, there is a thermostat which has mechanical or electronic thermostatic valves. Anti-scald valves are available too which prevent the water from getting too hot. In a multiple shower outlet installation it is necessary to use two or more thermostat valves.

Actually it takes much longer to find out the root cause of the problem, than repairing it. If the diverter valve is malfunctioning, or if the hose is restricted, the switching back and forth from spray head to sink spout may be problematic. The cause could also be uneven water flow or just water at low pressure. But custom shower systems do not often have diverter valves, but multiple-head showers. This includes valves, water outlets, volume controls, shower heads, hand showers and body sprays.

A custom shower is a complicated plumbing fixture and hence should only be fixed by a professional and licensed plumbing contractor. It is just not possible to add more shower heads or sprays to an existing shower stall or tub enclosure.

The function of a diverter valve is to channel water to the showerhead or the hand shower or the body spray. It cannot do all these activities at the same time. If you have discovered that your shower diverter valve has a problem, it is not a simple task to replace it or replace its washer. The replacement unit must be exact and some shower faucets have a built-in pressure valve. Let the job be done by an experienced plumber, so that the replacement matches perfectly.

It will make your kitchen a good gathering place for your family and friends.

Victorian style faucets generally come in nickel, pewter or stainless steel. These warm tones will surely complement the natural or earthy elements in your kitchen. As always, before choosing a plumbing fixture, it is best to consult a professional plumber.

If you are thinking of installing a stylish faucet, here are some things that you should remember:

• Make sure that your antique faucet matches your kitchen piping. There is a huge difference between antique and antique in appearance. Always compare your Victorian styled faucet fitting with the fitting you have on your kitchen faucet to make certain that you have the exact match. Rather than doing this yourself, ask a plumbing contractor to help you out.
• When choosing your materials, it is important to consider their longevity. There are some that can easily rust or wear out quickly. Always choose the best material, for you would not want to install a faucet that is less than high-quality.
• Before installing your new styled faucet, make sure that you have replaced the washers, cleaned off any deposits, rust or stains. This will guarantee that your faucet will be fully operational and durable for long use.

Whether you have a small to medium size kitchen there are plenty of ways to decorate your kitchen that enhance a romantic style. These Victorian plumbing fixtures usually integrate a Romantic and French Country theme within them that will make your kitchen a more welcoming space in your home. It is one of the most notably seen and used instruments in the kitchen. That’s why choosing the perfect stainless steel sink is a tricky yet a very vital thing to know.

The main purpose of your stainless steel sink is to provide you a space where you can do all the washing tasks. It must be able to give you an easy way to finish the task in an orderly manner.

One of several things to consider before buying a stainless steel sink is its style. You can either have a top mount sink or under mount, depending on your taste, style and needs. Another thing to consider is its material. When buying household items we always take into consideration their durability and life span. Choosing a kitchen sink should be no exception. These days, stainless kitchen sinks are the most popular and practical solutions because not only are they easy to clean they are also comparatively cheaper than other types of sinks and they do not rust. Stainless steel sinks are not that expensive at all. A reputable company will be able to provide you with the perfect sink that will fit your needs and budget.

It is also important to consult professional plumbers because it involves plumbing and correct installation of the sink. These professionals will be able to give you good advice on the size and style that would best fit your kitchen. Not only that, they will also be able to present detailed planning to complete the project more efficiently and professionally.

Give yourself a summer treat: an outdoor shower enclosure is a perfect way to protect yourself from unwanted guests or prying eyes and also protect your privacy while showering outdoors under the bright blue sky. An outdoor shower is one of the ultimate relaxations after a day of playing in the beach, biking or gardening.

If you want to add a simple wooded outdoor shower enclosure to your freestanding shower structure at the private corner of your property there are plenty of outdoor shower designs you can choose from. For an outdoor shower structure, you can get plenty of information about basic plumbing fixtures and structural requirements from the internet or from professional plumbers.

For outdoor showers, the base or platform must not be from a slippery material; a stone base would be perfect and can also be used for other shower design ideas. Anti slippery materials along with stones would make a perfect base/platform to avoid disagreeable accidents. These materials are best recommended because they are safe and hence harmful accidents can be prevented.

Meanwhile, an outdoor shower enclosure can give you more freedom of use for an outdoor shower. You no longer have to walk through your house soaking wet or trailing sand from the beach. You can provide supplies like soap and towels. Your outdoor shower enclosure can be as simple or as elaborate as you want to make it, you can also choose the level of privacy you want for your outdoor shower enclosure.

Having an outdoor shower in the garden is definitely in vogue, so if you have some free space in your garden you should have one too. Consult your local plumbers about possible installation options.

It is hard to keep track of plumbing prices, especially when there's tons of work to do. Estimating plumbing costs will give you assurance that your plumber will not overcharge you.

The correct way to begin estimating the costs of plumbing is to calculate the cost of materials. Ask your contractor which materials, fixtures, valves and sealants are needed for the project. You can perform your own investigation by visiting the local hardware or home improvement stores to have a basis of the price. Check the actual price of the fixtures and materials that you want and calculate the equipment needed for the project. Next, take accurate measurements of the area. Sometimes, plumbers charge by square foot. Knowing the exact size of the bathroom will result in good plumbing quotes. And most importantly, ask the plumbing contractor how long it will take for them to finish the job. To calculate the labor cost of the project, base your estimate on the standard time required for them to finish the job and the nature of the work. Also, count up additional charges including the location, difficulty of the work, gas, fees and permits. Do not forget to include the time it will take to process permits.

Estimating plumbing costs can be very difficult if you do not have any experience with quoting. You need the help of a reputable plumbing contractor to guide you and help you understand the necessary man-hours to complete the job. Familiarize yourself with the different ways to pay a plumber. You have a choice amongst flat rate, hourly rate or per square foot. Make sure that you know the pros and cons of each choice. Flat rate will ensure that the price will not be increased after the work is done. However, the quality of their work cannot be assured. Paying hourly rate or per square foot will ensure excellent workmanship. So, take some time to review the work of your chosen plumbing contractor and verify the reputation of the company through the BBB.

It is important to take advantage of this and get as many free estimates as you can. Comparing quotes from different plumbing companies is a simple way to find a plumber that you can afford. By doing just a bit of research you can save yourself a lot of time and money.

All you need to do is visit the website of the reputable company of your choice. Most plumbers offer plumbing free estimates online. You do not have to drive around town to find a plumbing company you can trust. What you need is a good internet connection and the correct details of the job. There are several factors that will influence plumbing quotes. Providing the exact details of the type of job will lead the plumbing quote to be as close to the final price as possible.

Some of the factors that influence plumbing free estimates include: the extent of the work, deadline of the job, location, materials, equipments, permits, fees, demolition, gas, food, insurance and manpower. Rush jobs require an immediate response, causing them to be more expensive. Keep in mind that estimates are rarely accurate. There might be additional charges after the work has been done.
To reduce your plumbing expenses, perform a thorough search of your plumbing system. Check for leaks, cracks, holes or anything out of the ordinary. This way, you will be aware of the problem and therefore, better able to determine how much work needs to be done. These are just some of the basic factors that increase plumbing repair estimates. There are many other factors that will affect the price of plumbers. Most homeowners make it their goal to reduce the plumbing costs as much as they can. We aim to provide you with some ideas on just how this can be done. It all begins with plumbing repair estimates.

To reduce plumbing repair expenses, try to fix any minor problems yourself. Clogged toilets can be easily resolved using a plunger or some chemicals. Try to solve the problem first before contacting your local plumber. If the problem is too big for you to handle, then consult a professional. But before calling a plumber, make sure you perform your own check up. A plumber can spend hours attempting to locate the source of the problem. You can save plenty of time and money by conducting your own search and assessing your own plumbing system. Another way to reduce plumbing repair estimates is to buy the materials yourself. You can contact a professional and give him a complete description of the problem. Ask the plumber what materials and parts will be needed for the job. You can visit any local hardware store to buy the materials for the project. In addition to that, you can decrease plumbing repair rates by hiring a local plumber. Plumbing companies charge you for the travel time and gas expenses. And lastly, cost reduction can be achieved by obtaining permits yourself. Plumbers charge you for the time they spent getting permits and for the gas used to travel to and from the job. You can save plenty of money if you perform some of the requirements for the project.

Whether you plan to hire a professional or intend to do the work yourself, it is always best to do your own quote. Visit local hardware stores and compare the price of the fixtures that you need. Being educated and aware of the plumbing repair quotes of different companies and the prices of the materials and fixtures is the best way to combat overpriced plumbing estimates.
